2009 Petite Sirah
Notes
Inky purple color, aromas of blueberry cobbler, fresh figs, and black raspberry jump from the glass. In the mouth, this 2009 Petite Sirah shows the depth from old vine Petite Sirah in Lodi as well as Paso Robles. The flavors show wild Maine blueberry with flickering flavors of sweet leather, raspberry jam, and sweet cinnamon latte. This wine finishes with lingering blackberry, balsamic glaze, bittersweet chocolate, and smoked caramel.
This is a Zinfandel drinker’s Petite Sirah. There is wonderful old vine character that comes through in this glass of wine. It has a sweet and sappy profile with very concentrated dark blue fruit. The Lodi lot of fruit was absolutely unadulterated pure fruit and deep dark color. The Paso lot tended to lead towards notes of leather and subtle latte coffee and chocolate notes. Tempranillo, Syrah, and Zinfandel were blended in to add notes of spice and rich fruit without deterring from the classic Petite Sirah profile. Alicante Bouchet added color to the profile in order to keep this blend inky purple.
Pairings
This is a fun glass of Petite Sirah. This blend would be fine on its own as a fireside sipper. Pair with Korean Short Ribs, Captain Crunch coated fried chicken with mashed sweet potatoes and cornbread, or Sweet Sausage Pizza with caramelized fennel and ricotta cheese.
