Pennywise

2010 Petite Sirah

Notes

Once again, the Pennywise Petite Sirah delivers dark purple color approaching black in color. After a few swirls, the aroma shows dark black fruit, raspberry, burnt caramel, and hints of cedar and vanilla. After taking a sip, flavors of brambly blackberry, tart cherry, sweet leather, cocoa nibs, and Dad’s Root Beer take center stage finishing with notes of blackstrap molasses, blueberry compote, savory bacon, and cinnamon bark.

Once again, this is a Zin-lover’s Petite Sirah. We pick the grapes when they are extremely ripe in order to trap that black fruit character without losing the notes of terrior. The 2010 year was a cool vintage and allowed us some extended hang time without losing the grapes natural acidity. A majority of the fruit, Petite Sirah as well as the Syrah leg, came from a few vineyards in the rolling hills just outside Tracy, CA in the Northern Interior Valley. This fruit brings jammy black fruit character with some of the molasses and cherry nuances. The balance of the fruit is a combo of Petite Sirah from Lodi, which brings raspberry and sweet leather notes, and Petite Sirah from Paso Robles, which adds more cherry and bitter chocolate notes as well as a noticeable terrior note from the Paso Dust. Just a splash of Paso Sangiovese rounded out the blend by added a touch of softness and red raspberry fruit. All this fruit is held together by the addition of dark toasted French oak which adds the sassafras, bacon, and cinnamon flavors to the blend. This kind of wood adds complexity and complements the blend while keeping elements that keep you drawn to the glass. We are very proud to bring another great Petite Sirah to your table. Enjoy!!

Pairings

The 2010 vintage Petite Sirah would pair perfectly with Tri Tip BBQ with a dry rub and a side of collard greens and creamed corn (homemade of course), classic carbonara with lots of smoky bacon or pancetta, or Al Pastor Pork soft tacos in fresh white corn tortillas alongside pinto bean refried beans and Mexican slaw.
