2012 Petite Sirah

Winemaker Blend Notes:

The 2012 vintage shows textbook Petite Sirah color with an inky purple hue. The aromatics show notes of intense blueberry, dark cherry reduction, violets, and vanilla bean. Once again, the flavors start sweet and then get darker on the finish. This blend starts with blueberry pie, blackberry, sweet purple basil, and dark caramel. The wine finishes with dark molasses, toasted cedar plank, sweetened dried cherries, and mocha coffee.

Food Pairings

This is a great grilling wine. Serve with burgers topped with carmelized onions and BBQ sauce, sticky ribs, or grilled chicken alongside sweet potato fries and coleslaw. I am a sucker for the barbeque chicken pizza and this Petite Sirah would go great with that as well.

Winemaker Sourcing and Harvest Notes:

The 2012 harvest was a great season for varietals like Petite Sirah. The true art of Petite Sirah is to harness the fruit when the sugar quickly climbs. This way, you get really ripe fruit flavors with round tannins and a wonderful crisp acidity. This glass of wine is a great representation of that balance of fruit, tannin and acidity. The Lodi and Contra Costa Petite Sirah gave the blend gobs of blue and black fruit notes with great color and acidity. I added 6% Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon to give the blend a little more structure and rich tannins. The 6% Paso Syrah from the Balakian Vineyard gave the blend a touch of wild fruit notes and complexity. I feel that this is one of the true value Petite Sirah’s on the market that showcases the nature of California Petite Sirah at its best. Cheers.
